Eles Vão te Matar: Divertido
Quando apareceu para mim o trailer de Eles Vão te Matar pela primeira vez eu já quis assistir o filme. Gosto bastante da Zazzie Beetz desde que a vi em Atlanta (série de 2016-2022) e logo em seguida no filme DeadPool 2 (1018) em que fazia a fantástica mutante Dominó que acho que tem um dos melhores poderes apelões da Marvel, ela tem o poder de manipular probabilidades causando para si sorte e para os inimigos azar. Minha terapeuta sabe o quanto esse "poder" precisa ser trabalhado em mim, principalmente por eu não ter poder nenhum, e se tivesse, ele estaria um pouco invertido no meu caso. E aqui nesse filme, que estou comentando, ela faz a Asia Reaves que é bem parecida com a Dominó.
No trailer eu percebi que iria ser uma farofada, algo meio humorístico, o que ficou muito evidente aos 28 minutos e 50 segundos do filme. Até o 19 minutos eu achei que estava indo até para um lado de suspense meio sério e nos 10 minutos seguintes começou a titubear para longe disso. E depois foi só ladeira a baixo na palhaçada e incrivelmente ladeira a cima no quesito diversão. Nós nunca sabemos o quanto um filme é autoral ou uma homenagem a outro título. Eu realmente senti em vários momentos de decepações de membros um misto de nostálgica recordação de Kill Bill (2004).
Aqui acompanhamos a Asia Reaves entrando num hotel disfarçada para resgatar sua irmã desaparecida e lá se depara com um grupo que a quer como sacrifício ao deus, melhor, demônio deles. Parece que eles fazem isso há décadas. E olha, mesmo tento mortes rocambolescas tudo faz total sentido e diverte. Diversão claramente é a motivação da história. Por mais que o roteiro seja bem amarrado tem os efeitos em sua maioria práticos. E isso dá uma graça maravilhosa. Claro que depois de tantos anos de cinema quando vamos assistir um filme sabemos que tudo é "mentira", contudo, o CGI acabou mais atrapalhando que ajudando nessa aparência de mostrar "verdade". Com bons cortes de cenas, movimentos de câmera e luzes bem trabalhadas os efeitos práticos acabam dando aquele toque tosco que faz diferença. E esse filme brinca muito com cortes de pescoços, explosões de cabeça, facadas, membros tirados do lugar, uns andando por aí espionando e um monte de outras formas de retratar as mais diversas formas de machucar e matar alguém. E olha que tem um bônus, o sobrenatural se faz presente de um jeito bem assustador apesar do tom cômico. É que sou católico e perdi esse misticismo todo que os filmes exaltam tanto em relação ao capiroto, mas assustaria bem e, em outras épocas, não assistiria sozinho de noite nunca. Hoje evoluí, meus medos são outros: boletos. Nossa Senhora, só de lembrar até arrepia a espinha!
Realmente eu esperava um filme trasheira e bobo e veio com a diversão de brinde. Achei mesmo que iria para uma linha fácil de "final girl" no estilo Casamento Sangrento, que o 2 também tem estreia para esse ano. Eles Vão te Matar conta ainda com uma louca chefe dos empregados vivida por Patrícia Arquete e o eterno sonserino Tom Felton fazendo um dos perseguidores de Asia. Tudo tem que ser assistido com a premissa da diversão, assim, as cenas absurdas e violentas não só farão sentido, como, muitas vezes, elas são a piada da história.
They’re Going to Kill You: Fun
When the trailer for They’re Going to Kill You first popped up for me, I immediately wanted to watch it. I’ve liked Zazie Beetz ever since I saw her in Atlanta, and soon after in Deadpool 2, where she played the fantastic mutant Domino. I think Domino has one of the best overpowered abilities in Marvel: she can manipulate probabilities, bringing herself good luck while giving her enemies bad luck. My therapist knows how much that “power” would need to be developed in me—especially since I have no powers at all, and if I did, mine would probably work in reverse. And here, in this film, she plays Asia Reaves, who is quite similar to Domino.
From the trailer, I could tell it was going to be a wild, over-the-top ride with a comedic edge, something that becomes very clear around the 28-minute, 50-second mark. Up until about minute 19, I thought it was heading into more serious suspense territory, and then over the next ten minutes it started wobbling away from that. Afterward, it was all downhill into ridiculousness—and somehow uphill when it came to entertainment. We never really know how much a film is being original or paying homage to another title. In several moments of limbs being chopped off, I genuinely felt a nostalgic echo of Kill Bill: Volume 1.
Here, we follow Asia Reaves as she sneaks into a hotel to rescue her missing sister, only to run into a group that wants to use her as a sacrifice for their god—or rather, demon. Apparently, they’ve been doing this for decades. And honestly, even with the outrageous deaths, everything somehow makes sense and remains entertaining. Fun is clearly the story’s main motivation. As tightly put together as the script is, most of the effects are practical, which gives the movie a wonderful charm. After so many years of cinema, we all know what we’re watching is “fake,” but CGI has often hurt more than helped when it comes to creating the illusion of truth. With clever editing, camera movement, and strong lighting, practical effects bring that delightfully cheesy touch that really matters. This movie has a blast with slit throats, exploding heads, stabbings, limbs ripped out of place, some of them wandering around spying, and plenty of other creative ways to injure and kill someone. And there’s a bonus: the supernatural element is genuinely creepy despite the comedic tone. I’m Catholic, so I’ve lost some of the mysticism movies love to give the devil, but it still would’ve scared me—and in other times, I’d never have watched this alone at night. Today I’ve evolved; my fears are different now: bills. Sweet Mother of God, just thinking about them sends chills down my spine.
I truly expected a trashy, silly movie and instead got genuine fun as a bonus. I honestly thought it would follow the easy “final girl” route, in the style of Ready or Not, whose sequel is also set to release this year. They’re Going to Kill You also features a delightfully unhinged head of staff played by Patricia Arquette, along with the forever Slytherin Tom Felton as one of Asia’s pursuers. Everything has to be watched with fun as the premise. That way, the absurd and violent scenes not only make sense, but often become the punchline themselves.
