Pela Metade: uma relação no mínimo distorcida

Pela Metade é uma série criada e roteirizada pelo Richard Gadd que também fez a aclamada Bebê Rena, , roteiro e atuação,  que não assisti, pois me causou gatilhos. Quem já teve stalker,  e anda se tratando por causa de ansiedade, não necessariamente causada por essa situação, talvez entenda. Pela Metade tem uma temporada com seis episódios sendo que só três foram disponibiliados até o momento pela Max. Sei que já prometi não fazer resenha antes de terminar uma temporada, mas quem somos nós senão seres contraditórios e que adora morder a própria língua? Até o momento está muito interessante.

Basicamente a série foca na relação, no mínimo distorcida, de dois rapazes que são meio irmãos por parte de mães que tem uma relação amorosa. Contudo, enquanto Niall (Jamie Bell) é tímido, confuso com sua sexualidade e um "bom garoto" Ruben (Gadd) é seu oposto, "malvado", esteve preso por arrancar o nariz de um cara a dentadas, agressivo, mas é bonitão e tem personalidade. Ambos, por necessidade inicial são obrigados a dividir o próprio quarto. Contudo a relação fica muito desconfortável em vários sentidos. Niall cria uma dependência emocional tamanha com o Ruben e a cada fase da vida dos dois limites são totalmente extrapolados. 

Essa situação complexa e pautada no domínio de Ruben perpassa toda a relação dos dois. Contudo, isso não é spoiler, pois faz parte da primeira cena, Niall, já mais velho, está no dia do seu casamento tranquilo quando Ruben aparece para bagunçar a vida dele e quebrar seu nariz. Antes da cerimônia em si os dois vão tirar a limpo essa estranha relação e para entendermos como chegou até ali aquilo tudo inicia-se o flashback para nos mostrar como os dois viveram e o que levou até ali. 

Até o presente momento a série tem entregado bastante com as atuações nervosas de Bell e do bravo e irritadiço Gadd. Eu não estava reconhecendo o Bell e fui dar uma olhada no que ele fez e me surpreendi que ele foi o sensível Billy Elliot (2000) e deu a voz, na adaptação animada, a Tintim e estrelou uma parcela de filmes com relativo sucesso, Rocketman, King Kong, Expresso do Amanhã, enfim, inúmeras produções. 

Gadd é a primeira vez que vejo a atuando. Por mais desprezível que seja seu personagem possui um certo carisma. Não sei dizer se vai finalizar satisfatóriamente essa temporada ou se haverá outra. Imagino que seja uma série de uma história fechada. Como não está interiamente disponibilizada promete bastante. Se continuar para o caminho que está propondo a série vai ser bem interessante. 

Reforço minha opinião contradiótia que coloquei acima, eu não assisti inteira, mas está  bem interessante até o momento. Ela flerta com o desconforto. Ao contrário de Bebê Rena, eu estou conseguindo assistir sem me causar crises de ansiedade, mesmo sendo um tema delicado para muitos.

            Halfway There is a series created and written by Richard Gadd, who also made the acclaimed Baby Reindeer — writing and starring in it as well — which I have not watched because it triggered me. Anyone who has ever had a stalker, and is undergoing treatment for anxiety, not necessarily caused by that situation, might understand. Halfway There has one season with six episodes, though only three have been released so far on Max. I know I already promised not to review a show before finishing a season, but who are we if not contradictory beings who love biting our own tongues? So far, it has been very interesting.

            Basically, the series focuses on the deeply distorted relationship between two young men who are half-brothers through their mothers, who are romantically involved. While Niall (Jamie Bell) is shy, confused about his sexuality, and a “good boy,” Ruben (Gadd) is his complete opposite: cruel, aggressive, and once imprisoned for biting a man’s nose off — but he is handsome and charismatic. Due to circumstances at first, the two are forced to share a bedroom. However, the relationship becomes deeply uncomfortable in many ways. Niall develops an overwhelming emotional dependency on Ruben, and with each stage of their lives, boundaries are completely shattered.

            This complex dynamic, centered around Ruben’s dominance, runs throughout their relationship. Still, this is not a spoiler, since it happens in the very first scene: an older Niall is calmly preparing for his wedding day when Ruben suddenly appears to destroy his peace and break his nose. Before the ceremony itself, the two try to settle this strange relationship once and for all, and to understand how things reached that point, the story dives into a flashback showing how they lived and what led them there.

            So far, the series has delivered strong performances from Bell and from the fierce and irritable Gadd. I did not even recognize Bell at first, so I looked into his career and was surprised to remember he was the sensitive Billy in Billy Elliot. He also voiced Tintin in the animated adaptation and has starred in several relatively successful films such as Rocketman, King Kong, and Snowpiercer, among many others.

            This is the first time I have seen Gadd acting. As despicable as his character may be, he still carries a certain charm. I cannot yet say whether this season will end satisfactorily or if there will be another one. I imagine it is meant to be a self-contained story. Since the full season has not been released yet, it still holds a lot of promise. If it continues down the path it is proposing, the series could become something truly compelling.

            I will reinforce the contradictory opinion I mentioned earlier: I have not finished watching it, but it has been very interesting so far. The show constantly flirts with discomfort. Unlike Baby Reindeer, I have been able to watch this one without triggering anxiety attacks, even though it deals with a delicate subject for many people.
