Em 2022 Shelby Van Pelt publicou seu livro de mesmo nome que conta a história de Tova, uma senhorinha viúva que trabalha  de faxineira num aquário no periodo noturno para não pensar no filho que morreu por um motivo que descobrimos depois de vários minutos corridos. E, deixando claro, eu não li esse livro que foi um sucesso na época de estreia.  No meio dos acontecimentos cotidianos aparece um, aparentemente, desleixado Caneron que toma seu lugar no trabalho durante uma licença que foi obrigada a tirar devido um acidente. 

Uma históriazinha banal, não fosse a peculiaridade de ser uma fábula moderna. Nela temos o grande Marcellus, um polvo. E é ele quem narra a história toda pelo seu ponto de vista superior, como ele mesmo modestamente insiste em dizer. Quem faz a voz em off de Marcellus é Alfred Molina e em sua narrativa simpática vemos que tanto a vida de Tova quanto a de Cameron se desenrolam para ser mais interessante que se pode imaginar. Nessa dupla de personagens temos uma octogenária Sally Field, bem frágil de aparência que ainda faz bonito interpretado. E, eu estava curioso para vê-lo em ação, o rapaz é interpretado pelo Lewis Pullman, filho do Bill Pullman que cresci vendo filmes desse ator. Pullman filho faz bonito em tela. 

O filme é bem Sessão da Tarde e pipocão, talvez hoje possamos trocar para é bem "Netflix". Além da plataforma ter produzido o filme é melhor para se referir esse tipo de produção. É uma ótima pedida para toda família assistir juntos. E um filme de pessoas maduras em tela. As produções hollywoodianas não gostam muito de idosos em tela como protagonistas, no máximo coadjuvantes de luxo, e aqui Tova é a principal, por mais que Cameron tenha sua importância. 

Um filme gostosinho que trás um calorzinho no coração em tempos de dureza e falta de humanidade em muita gente. Vale o tempo ganho com essa diversão em formato de filme. Ele entrega bastante o que propõe. E isso é um diferencial hoje em dia.

            In 2022, Shelby Van Pelt published her novel of the same name, telling the story of Tova, an elderly widow who works as a janitor at an aquarium during the night shift in order to avoid thinking about her son, who died for reasons we only discover much later on. And, just to make things clear, I never read the book, despite the huge success it achieved when it was first released. In the middle of these everyday events appears the seemingly careless Cameron, who temporarily takes over Tova’s position after she is forced to take leave because of an accident.

            It would be an ordinary little story if not for the fact that it works as a modern fable. At the center of it all, we have the great Marcellus — an octopus. And he is the one narrating the entire story through his own superior point of view, as he modestly insists on reminding us. The voice-over for Marcellus is performed by Alfred Molina, and through his charming narration we realize that both Tova’s and Cameron’s lives unfold into something far more interesting than one might initially expect. Among this pair of protagonists, we have an octogenarian Sally Field, physically fragile in appearance but still delivering a beautiful performance. And I was curious to see him on screen: the young man is played by Lewis Pullman, son of Bill Pullman, whose films I grew up watching. Pullman’s son does an excellent job on screen.

            The film has that classic feel-good afternoon-movie energy — though nowadays we could simply call it “very Netflix.” Besides the platform having produced the movie, that label fits this kind of production perfectly. It is a great choice for the whole family to watch together. And, most importantly, it is a movie centered around mature people. Hollywood productions usually do not enjoy placing elderly characters in leading roles; at best, they become luxurious supporting characters. Here, however, Tova is undeniably the protagonist, even though Cameron also carries an important role.

            It is a comforting little film that brings warmth to the heart during times marked by harshness and a disturbing lack of humanity in many people. It is absolutely worth the time spent on this cinematic piece of entertainment. The movie fully delivers what it promises — and nowadays, that alone is already something special.
